Hubli


Pronounced As: hoobl-darvad or Hubli-Dharwar hoobl-darvar , city (1991 pop. 648,298), Karnataka (formerly Mysore) state, SW India. It is located on the main Bombay-Bangalore railway and highway. The cities of Hubli and Dharwad, 13 mi (21 km) apart, were incorporated as one city in 1961. Dharwad is the district administrative center for a rice- and cotton-growing area. Hubli is a trade and transportation center, with Cotton and Silk factories, Railway workshops, and a major newspaper industry. It is built around an 11th-century Hindu stone temple. Dharwad grew up around a fort thought to have been built in 1405 by an officer of the Hindu king of Vijayanagar. It was captured by the Muslims in 1685 and by the Marathas in 1753. Hyder Ali, ruler of Mysore, occupied Dharwad in 1778. It was ceded to the British in 1818. There are many colleges in the metropolitan area, making it an education center for South India.

Hubli is well connected by road and rail. The nearest Airport is at Belgaum & Goa. The city is located on the main Bombay-Bangalore railway and highway.

Road : 406 km from Bangalore to Hubli on the Pune - Bangalore National Highway NH4.

Rail : 410 kms from Bangalore to Hubli.

Places of Interest

Unkal Lake: Unkal is a beautiful water spot with resplendent sunset view. Here we have bamly breeze blowing in the dusk, where people ranging from infants to aged come to alleviate their pains of tiresome day. It has green garden, recreational facilities for the children, boating and also grubb  forgrandieurs. Juxtraposed to this spot is a palestial Hotel Naveen.

Glass House: Glass House as the name itself says that it's a palace of glass.This was inaugurated by late smt. Indira Gandhi.

Siddarudh Math: It is a prominent religious institution, a center of Advaita philosophy as preached by Swami Siddharoodha (1837-1929). The latter has a very large number of devotees among all communities, all over Karnataka and also in the neighboring states, Maharashtra and Goa.
